This two-day immersive journey follows the course of the Gambia River, the lifeline of the country and one of West Africa’s most important natural and historical corridors. The tour combines UNESCO heritage, authentic inland culture, and unforgettable wildlife encounters, offering a deep and unhurried experience of rural Gambia.

Day 1 – Heritage, History & Life Along the Gambia River
The journey begins inland, gradually revealing the landscapes and communities shaped by the Gambia River for centuries.

The first major stop is the Wassu Stone Circles, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most significant archaeological landmarks in West Africa. Dating back over 2,000 years, these mysterious megaliths provide insight into ancient burial rituals and early civilizations that once thrived along the riverbanks.

Continuing through rural regions, the tour offers a genuine glimpse into traditional Gambian village life. 

In the afternoon, the experience moves to Janjanbureh Island (Georgetown), a place of immense historical importance in Gambian history. Visits include:

• Governor’s Residence, reflecting the colonial era

• Methodist Church, a symbol of early Christian influence

• Kankurang Museum, dedicated to living initiation rituals and cultural traditions

• Village School & Freedom Tree, powerful symbols of education, resistance, and community life

Later, arrival in Kuntaur and check-in at Kairo Lodge, beautifully located along the river. The day ends allowing time to relax and absorb the peaceful atmosphere of the Gambia River at sunset.

Day 2 – Gambia River Safari & Wildlife Encounters
After an included breakfast, the highlight of the tour begins: a boat safari on the Gambia River within the River Gambia National Park.

This slow-paced river journey offers one of the best opportunities in the country to observe wildlife in its natural habitat. Along the way to Baboon Island, you may encounter:

• Chimpanzees living freely on protected islands

• Hippos resting along the riverbanks

• Baboons, monkeys, and crocodiles

• A wide variety of colorful bird species

This river safari is special because it allows ample time for observation, photography, and appreciation of the ecosystem, without rush or pressure.

After returning from the safari, we begin the journey back to the coast, bringing the experience to a relaxed and satisfying close.
