Day 2 – Markets, Crafts, Sacred Crocodiles, Coastal Life & Nature Experience
Our cultural and coastal tour begins in Bakau with a visit to the sacred Kachikally Crocodile Pool, a spiritual site linked to fertility, healing, and Gambian traditions, where crocodiles live peacefully among visitors.
We then continue to Serrekunda Market, the commercial heart of The Gambia, exploring its busy stalls filled with fruits, spices, fabrics, and local crafts, followed by a brief visit to a batik workshop, where traditional wax-dye textiles are produced.
Next, we head to Brikama, known for its wood carving heritage. Here, we visit local workshops displaying handmade masks, drums, and wooden art.
In the afternoon, the tour moves south to Sanyang Beach, allowing time to relax by the ocean in a natural coastal setting.
The day ends at Tanji Fishing Village, where traditional fishing activities and fish-smoking areas offer an authentic view of Gambian coastal life before returning.
The day will begin at Abuko Nature Reserve, the country’s first protected area. We’ll stroll along lush trails to spot monkeys, vibrant birds, and crocodiles, while learning about important local conservation efforts. At the small wildlife orphanage, you’ll see hyenas and baboons up close, gaining a deeper understanding of the Gambian ecosystem.
Next, we’ll visit the lively Abuko animal market, where goats and sheep are traded for traditional celebrations and rituals — a truly authentic glimpse into rural life.
Our adventure continues at Lamin Lodge, a charming rustic structure perched on stilts amidst the mangroves. From there, we’ll take a traditional canoe ride through peaceful waterways and visit a small women-run oyster farm, a shining example of sustainability in the region.
Afterwards, we’ll explore the famous Brikama craft market, a vibrant hub bursting with local creativity. Here, you’ll find beautifully handcrafted wood carvings, colorful textiles, intricate jewelry, and traditional drums — and you’ll even get to see artists working live in the woodcarving workshop.
Day 4 – Historic River Journey & Bijilo Nature Experience
The day begins at Banjul Port, where we start a scenic river journey about 25 km upstream along the Gambia River. Our first stops are Albreda and Juffureh, villages deeply connected to the transatlantic slave trade. You’ll meet direct descendants of Kunta Kinteh and visit the Juffureh Museum, which preserves powerful stories passed down through generations.
Next, a small boat takes us to Kunta Kinteh Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, we explore the ruins of the old fort and holding cells, creating a deep emotional connection with history.
In the afternoon, we return to the coast and visit Bijilo Forest Park, enjoying a relaxing walk among green trails, birds, and friendly monkeys before returning.
Experience one of Gambia’s most powerful cultural traditions with the Mandinga Masquerade on this full-day immersive journey. Begin with a visit to a local village school, learning about daily life, education, and community values. Participate in Tapalapa bread-making, discovering its role in Gambian family and village life. The day’s highlight is the Masquerade celebration, featuring sacred masks, vibrant costumes, live drumming, chanting, and dance, representing community protection, storytelling, and ritual. Conclude with an authentic home cooking experience, preparing a traditional Gambian meal with a local family, and enjoy the attaya tea ceremony, a symbol of friendship and storytelling. The day ends with drumming, dance, and cultural exchange, creating lasting memories of Mandinga heritage, community, and connection.
We will pick you up from your accommodation and transfer you to the airport for your departure in the afternoon.
